High Speed Steel NPT Taper Pipe Taps – 1/16″ to 4
High Speed Steel NPT Taper Pipe Taps
Premium HSS NPT Taper Pipe Taps designed for cutting new internal pipe threads and cleaning or repairing existing NPT threads.
Available in a complete industrial size range from 1/16″-27 NPT through 4″-8 NPT, these pipe taps provide the toughness and cutting performance required for professional machine shops, fabrication, maintenance, plumbing, repair and industrial threading applications.
NPT stands for National Pipe Taper. Unlike straight machine-screw threads, NPT threads have a tapered profile that becomes progressively tighter as the mating pipe or fitting is threaded into place.

Understanding NPT Pipe Tap Sizes
The listed NPT size refers to the nominal pipe size, not the actual outside diameter of the tap.
For example:
1/2″ x 14 NPT
means a tap for a 1/2″ nominal pipe connection with 14 threads per inch.
Because pipe sizing is nominal, the physical diameter of the tap and threaded connection will be larger than the nominal size shown.
NPT vs. NPTF
These taps are designed to produce NPT tapered pipe threads.
NPT and NPTF Dryseal threads are related standards, but they should not automatically be treated as interchangeable when an engineering drawing, fitting or application specifically requires one thread form.
Always match the tap to the thread specification required for the application.
Recommended Use
For best results, use the proper tap drill size and suitable cutting fluid for the material being threaded.
NPT taps become progressively tighter as they advance because of the tapered thread form. Larger pipe taps can require substantial torque and should be used with appropriately sized tapping equipment or tap wrenches.
