SDS-Plus Carbide Tipped Concrete & Masonry Drill Bits

Some drill bits make excuses. These make holes. Our standard SDS-Plus concrete drill bits are hand-picked for precision, durability and consistent performance in concrete, brick, block, stone and asphalt. Each one has a carbide cutting tip on a hardened steel body, and they come in 42 sizes from 3/16″ to 1″ in diameter. Overall lengths run from a stubby 4-1/2″ to a long-reach 24″. We’re just a BIT more twisted about drill bits, so we built a chart that tells you exactly how much bit you actually get to drill with.

Why SDS-Plus?

SDS-Plus is a slotted 10mm shank that snaps into an SDS-Plus rotary hammer with no chuck key and no tightening. The slots let the bit slide back and forth as the hammer strikes while the drive keys turn it. That means the hammer’s energy goes into the concrete instead of being lost in a slipping chuck. The result is faster drilling, less wobble and quicker bit changes.

Important: SDS-Plus bits fit SDS-Plus rotary hammers only. They won’t fit a larger SDS-Max hammer without an adapter, and they’re not made for standard three-jaw chucks or hex drivers.

What It Drills

  • Poured concrete slabs, footings and walls
  • Concrete block and CMU
  • Brick and mortar joints
  • Natural stone
  • Asphalt

Typical jobs include anchor holes for Tapcon screws, wedge anchors and sleeve anchors. They’re also used for running conduit, plumbing and low-voltage wiring through masonry, mounting ledger boards, railings and racking, and setting dowels and pins.

Built for Repetitive Jobsite Use

Drilling one hole is easy. Drilling the hundredth one, in the heat, off a ladder, is where a bit earns its spot in the bucket. These bits are hand-picked for repetitive jobsite and shop use. The carbide tip holds its edge in abrasive masonry, and the fluted steel body carries dust out of the hole so the tip keeps cutting instead of grinding. Long sizes up to 24″ give you the reach for thick walls and deep embedments.

Anchor Size Quick Guide

Anchor Drill Bit Size Where to Find It
3/16″ Tapcon 5/32″ Tapcon SDS-Plus Bits
1/4″ Tapcon 3/16″ This listing or Tapcon SDS-Plus Bits
Wedge anchors (3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″) Same as anchor diameter This listing
Drop-in anchors Per anchor maker SDS-Plus Drill Stop Bits

Tapcon tip: drill at least 1/4″ deeper than your embedment so dust has somewhere to go. Wedge anchor tip: drill at least 1/4″ deeper than the anchor’s embedment and never oversize the hole, or the anchor won’t set. Always follow the anchor manufacturer’s published specs for hole diameter, depth and edge distance.

Drilling Tips

  • Use hammer mode (rotary hammer setting). SDS-Plus bits are made to drill with hammer action.
  • Let the tool do the work. Steady, moderate pressure drills faster than leaning on it and keeps the carbide cooler.
  • Pull the bit back every inch or so on deep holes to clear dust from the flutes.
  • Blow or vacuum the hole clean before setting any anchor.
  • Hit steel? Stop. Standard masonry bits aren’t made to cut rebar. Switch to an SDS-Plus rebar cutter, get through the steel, then finish with your bit.
  • Wear eye protection, hearing protection and a dust mask rated for silica dust.

FAQ

Will these fit my SDS-Max hammer or regular drill?
Not directly. They fit SDS-Plus rotary hammers. SDS-Max hammers need an SDS-Max to SDS-Plus adapter, and these bits aren’t made for standard keyed, keyless or hex chucks.

What’s the difference between overall length and usable length?
Overall length is the whole bit, shank included. Usable length is the cutting depth you actually get in the wall. Always size by usable length.

What size bit do I need for Tapcon screws?
A 1/4″ Tapcon takes a 3/16″ bit. A 3/16″ Tapcon takes a 5/32″ bit, found on our Tapcon SDS-Plus page.

Standard or Premium+?
The standard bits are a great value for everyday holes. For heavy daily drilling in tough or reinforced concrete, step up to our Premium+ German bits below.

Need More? Go Premium+

When the job calls for maximum speed and service life, our Premium+ German SDS-Plus Concrete & Masonry Drill Bits are the upgrade. They’re made in Germany with a concave carbide tip, dual centering points and a reinforced wide flute, and they come in sizes starting at 5/32″.
