If you’ve ever cracked a sheet with a regular bit, you already know why drill bits for acrylic are ground differently. A metal-cutting bit has a 118° to 135° point and a positive rake that bites hard. In acrylic that bite grabs, cracks and chips the sheet, especially where the bit exits the back side. Acryli-Drills are ground the other way around: a sharp 60° point that eases into the material and a 0° rake edge that scrapes a clean hole instead of tearing one. The result is a smooth, round hole with no spider cracks and no blown-out back side.

How to Drill Acrylic Without Cracking It
1. Leave the masking film on. Mark your hole on the film. It protects the surface and helps keep the bit from skating.
2. Stay away from the edge. Keep the hole center at least 1-1/2 times the hole diameter from the edge of the sheet.
3. Clamp it down on a backing board. Clamp the sheet flat on a scrap of wood or MDF. A supported back side is the biggest single thing that stops chip-out when the bit exits.
4. Run a slower speed. The bigger the bit, the slower the speed. Too fast and the plastic heats up, melts and gums the flutes. Long, smooth curls coming off the bit tell you the speed and feed are right. Powdery chips mean too fast; melted, stringy chips mean the bit is rubbing instead of cutting.
5. Light, steady pressure. Let the 60° point do the work. Don’t lean on it.
6. Ease off before breakthrough. Back off the pressure as the point comes out the bottom of the sheet. The 0° rake keeps it from grabbing, and the lighter feed keeps the exit clean.
7. Keep it cool on thick stock. On material thicker than about 3/16″, pull the bit out every so often to clear chips and let it cool. A little water or a water-based coolant helps on deep holes.
